Two Stars

Wearin’ a paper gown, painted in that hospital glow
I could see it in his eyes—he was ready to go
Machines were a hummin’, foretellin’ his end
When he was gone, he left a message—paper and pen

It read,
The girls were quite pretty, the beer was damn cold
But everybody gets sick, and everybody gets old
All the best parts of living are what they call sins
I give it two stars, would not recommend

There’s a nurse in Kentucky still wearin’ my name
As a badge of honor, or maybe a mark of shame
She says she’s gonna love me to the bitter end
But it’s hard to be lovers when we never figured out how to be friends

She said,
You were the life of the party, and that party was loud
But you were a little too angry, a little too proud
The best part of us was letting it end
I give you two stars, would not recommend

I lived a little too fast and I never quite learned
I laughed a lot more than I probably deserved
If you’re lookin’ for salvation don’t look where I’ve been
Too many wrong turns carved deep in my skin

I tried prayers and I tried whiskey, leaned hard on both
Never found my heaven, but I stayed close to the road
Plant my tombstone somewhere with a hell of a view
If they ask you how too carve it, you’ll know what to do
